Asbestos cement boards were used in a range of applications from garage roof sheets and wall panels to backing panels behind radiators and boilers. Asbestos cement is a low risk material whilst in good condition that in many instances may remain in-situ. Asbestos cement is a non-licensed material that may be repaired or removed by a suitably trained general contractor wearing appropriate RPE/PPE and following HSE guidance work methods. If removed, asbestos cement must be disposed as hazardous waste like all other asbestos products

One of the most common uses for asbestos cement was as corrugated roof sheets to garages, outbuildings and industrial properties. Many of these are now approaching the end of their useful life and require repair or replacement. However, asbestos cement was banned for use in 1992 infavour of non-asbestos cement roof sheets. This can cause confusion as to how the material should be treated. If you are unsure of the date of manufacture & construction, we recommend you have the material tested to determine whether or not the board is asbestos-type.

Other common uses of asbestos boards were as undercloaking to the roof edge on housing, ceiling panels in integral garages and boiler rooms, heat shields behind radiators, panels beneath gas meters, stand-alone garage wall panels and chimney/fireplace panels.
